The Reality of the Billion Dollar Training Shoe Industry

Ever wonder how runners and athletes got by before Nike created the running shoe?  Didn’t these athletes suffer a number of injuries to their feet and legs due to running in thin soled leather shoes?  The surprising answer is NO!

Athletes today are suffering more foot and leg injuries (shin splints, plantar fasciitis) than ever before.  Even though they are running in what we are supposed to believe are the most technically advanced sneakers ever created, the rate of foot and leg injuries are rising every year.  I am sure you or somebody you know has experienced one of these injuries and wondered how this could happen.  You have all the most expensive gear and all you are doing is running which is a natural movement, right?  Yes and No!

Running barefoot is a natural movement.  Running with Nike Shox on, not natural at all.  When you run barefoot, your forefoot strikes the ground then your heel.  When you run in sneakers, the heel strikes first, then your forefoot.  This is the root of the problem.  Next time you go for a run, take your shoes off and run barefoot for a bit, one of two things will most likely happen.  Your foot will naturally adapt and strike with the forefoot, or you will continue to strike with the heel and notice the pain that comes from the heel impact.

Becoming Comfortable with “Uncomfortable”

When going through some of the workouts that we have our athletes participate in day in and day out, there is a high chance you will feel uncomfortable.  Uncomfortable with a new movement, an entire workout, the intensity level or, most likely, with the possibility of failure.  We all have a comfort level that we seldom like to leave behind and this restricts us from trying new things.  We always tell our athletes that the challenges of our workouts are there to make them better.  Better as a human being, better as an athlete, and better at feeling comfortable with “uncomfortable”.

Think about recent challenges at work, in life, or in your workouts that you turned away from because of the possibility of leaving your comfort zone?  Learn how to recognize when these moments happen and challenge yourself to push through them.
